COMMUNITY ACCESS
At Midwest Movement Collective, we believe movement is for everyone. Since opening in 2022, we’ve been committed to building a welcoming, intentionally inclusive, and diverse community, but we recognize that financial barriers can make it difficult for some to participate fully. Community Access is our way of breaking down those barriers.
Midwest Movement Collective has built access into our business model. A portion of our revenue every month goes into The Community Access Fund to support discounted memberships, a shared pool of class credits, and The Way We Move offerings. Together, these pathways help expand access and community care while sustainably compensating the people who hold these spaces. We also accept monetary and class credit donations to expand our impact.
We recognize that systemic and historical barriers impact communities differently, and we especially encourage those who are disproportionately affected — including BIPOC individuals and sex workers — to utilize these resources without hesitation.
What the Community access fund supports:
Community Access Memberships
Discounted memberships are available for anyone navigating financial constraints (designed for the committed mover who wants to come to one or more classes per week). We do not require applications, documentation, or proof of income — we trust our community to engage with integrity and request support when it is genuinely helpful. Discounts range from 15% to 50%, with the most common discount being 20% off monthly membership prices.
The Class Commons
The Class Commons is a shared pool of donated class credits and guest passes. Members who have unused credits or guest passes are invited to contribute by emailing desk@midmovecollective.com or texting us at 616-227-0760. Anyone is welcome to draw from the Commons when cost might prevent participation (typically designed for 1 to 5 classes at a time). At different moments, many of us will find ourselves on both sides of support — contributing when we have capacity and receiving when it makes participation possible.
The Way We Move Instructor Payments
The fund also helps guarantee facilitator compensation for our sliding-scale, affinity centered offerings through The Way We Move Workshops, ensuring instructors are compensated while participants get flexible pricing options. This structure supports both access and the long-term sustainability of community-led programming.

Join with A Collective Care Membership
The Collective Care Memberships are supported by The Community Access Fund and are designed to create access to a Midwest Movement Collective membership for folks who would not be able to afford dancing otherwise. It’s one way we’re trying to make the MMC community reflect the overall Grand Rapids/West Michigan community better.
Financial circumstances are shaped by a wide range of personal and systemic factors. If you are unsure if you want to utilize these resources, the list of considerations below might be helpful.
The Collective Care Membership might be the right fit for you if:
You are a sex worker or Person of Color. Without the experience and hard work of BIPOC sex workers and strippers, there would be no Midwest Movement Collective, as such we will always welcome you to utilize the Collective Care Membership. Please note, even if a membership isn’t right for you, you sex workers can receive 15% off all services with code: DANCER
You do not own a home
You do not have a postgraduate degree
You identify as a person with a disability
You are a single parent
English is not your first language
You have struggled to afford healthcare for yourself and/or your family
You have relied on credit card debt to cover basic needs
You do not have a financially stable family support system
Your income is the only financial support for others in addition to yourself.
You are unemployed or underemployed, not by choice
You have little to no expendable income for entertainment, travel, or dining out
You qualify for government assistance (e.g. food, unemployment, housing, etc.)
You are a full-time college student who receives no financial support from family or friends and/or you are eligible for the Pell Grant
You have had a substantial change in income or life circumstances and cannot justify or continue your current MMC membership as a result.
This list is not exhaustive and is not meant to be a set of requirements. It is meant to demonstrate the spirit of our Collective Care Membership. We trust that individuals will assess their financial situations honestly so this membership option can support as many of those who need it.
If you’ve decided this membership is right for you, please reach out to Kimmi, Director of Community at kimmi@midmovecollective.com or 616-300-2748 (call or text) to enroll in a Collective Care Membership. Don’t worry about figuring out which membership is right for you - we’ll figure that out on the call together.
**If you are a current Midwest Movement Collective member and would like to enroll in this program, contact Kimmi so we can adjust your current membership rate as appropriate.
***This is an ongoing program. As your needs change over time, please let us know so we can adjust your membership rate as appropriate.

Submit a proposal to facilitate an offering for The Way We Move. We are seeking facilitators for The Way We Move, our monthly workshops designed to expand access and belonging. Some offerings intentionally center specific communities. Proposals are welcome across all disciplines — not just movement. Think: craft nights for chronically ill folks, dance parties for sex workers, rest circles for parents, or something entirely your own. As a facilitator, you shape the experience and define the community you are centering. If you feel called to host, we invite you to share your idea using this form. Facilitators receive a guaranteed $100 payment for leading and holding community space and will receive all proceeds in excess of that amount.
Contribute to the Community Access Fund. This fund is about providing a way to make movement and dance more accessible for all of those around us. Whether you’re a current MMC member looking to share the community you love or a non-member who believes in what we are doing, we value your partnership in making the MMC mission a reality. If you’re ready to make a contribution, please call us at 616-227-0760.
